Trust Campaign Earns Reward for Zone 5
Albany, NY — At the American Marketing Association's 2006 Mark of Excellence Awards, Zone 5 was awarded the Mark of Excellence for its "Trust" campaign for Compensation Risk Managers (CRM), a workers' compensation group self-insurance administrator in New York State.
Zone 5's marketing efforts helped CRM to ensure both their broker and clients' perception of group self-insurance programs was that of a trustworthy and stable workers' compensation coverage option. Through print ads, a revised Web site, public relations, electronic and direct mail, along with broker events and support, Zone 5 was able to help CRM to grow their numbers of brokers in New York and California. This resulted in a significant growth in business and members in both states.
Each year, since 1995, the Albany Chapter of the American Marketing Association has presented the Mark of Excellence Awards. This year's ceremony took place on October 4, 2006, at the Albany Marriott.
Talking Billboard Campaign Breaks New Ground in Interactive Marketing
Billboards Defy Conventional Advertising
Albany, NY — Zone 5, a marketing communications firm in Albany, NY, recently unveiled a series of "talking" billboards across the state that represent the next step in the evolution of today's instant gratification advertising. The billboards promote the agency's client, Clarkson University (www.clarkson.edu). "We believe that Clarkson University defies convention. So it stands to reason that how we tell our story should also defy conventional advertising," said Kelly Chezum, Clarkson University's head of Marketing and External Relations.
In the past 12 months, Zone 5 has risen to that challenge by creating a series of print, interactive cable video, and outdoor advertisements designed to tell Clarkson University's story in a unique and memorable manner. The "talking" billboards are the next out-of-the-box component in the Clarkson University marketing campaign.
The "talking" billboards have radio transmitters developed by Zone 5 mounted on them, and are designed to entice drivers to tune into a prominently displayed AM radio frequency. What will curious drivers hear? A series of minute-long entertaining stories ("infotainment") about Clarkson University. Because there is no need to remember a Web address, the billboards avoid the possibility that a driver might forget the University's URL. Instead, the driver can instantly access the University's message at the point-of-contact.

A key partner that helped to actualize the "talking" billboard campaign is Lamar Advertising. When first approached about the concept of talking billboards, the outdoor advertising company accepted the challenge and worked to ensure that the radio transmitters would be operational. "We thought it was a great idea when Zone 5 proposed it to us. Naturally, being in this business, we were enthusiastic about offering a new dimension in outdoor advertising to our customers." said James Lamar, of Lamar Advertising.
Zone 5 attributes the creativity and innovation of its Clarkson University campaign to the unique nature of the client's brand, executed by a similarly unconventional mix of people on the client account team. Unlike traditional advertising and marketing agencies that stratify their personnel by job function, Zone 5 accepts that great ideas can come from anyone in the room. For example, the agency's Chief Technology Officer, who oversees Zone 5's IT systems, is a short-wave ham radio operator who contributed his personal expertise on short-wave radio frequency to the talking billboard campaign.
Three for Three: Zone 5's three entries named as finalists for the American Marketing Association's Mark of Excellence Awards
Zone 5, a Tech Valley marketing agency, has been recognized by the New York Capital Region Chapter of the American Marketing Association for three projects: the "Trust" Campaign for Compensation Risk Managers LLC; the "Easy To Switch" Campaign for Capital Communications Federal Credit Union; and the Child and Adult Care Food Program Marketing Plan for the New York State Department of Health. The firm's entries were recognized as three of the eleven total finalists for the 2006 Mark of Excellence Awards.
Zone 5 was honored for its "Trust" campaign for Compensation Risk Managers (CRM), a workers' compensation group self-insurance administrator in New York State. Zone 5's marketing efforts helped CRM to ensure both their broker and clients' perception of group self-insurance programs was that of a trustworthy and stable workers' compensation coverage option.
Zone 5's "Easy to Switch" campaign for Capital Communications Federal Credit Union helped the region's second largest credit union to increase awareness and preference for the organization while promoting checking account products that cement relationships with its members.
Thirdly, Zone 5 was recognized for the success of the marketing plan created for the Department of Health's Child and Adult Food Care Program. Not only did the number of successful applications dramatically improve, but also the culture of the Program's office changed to respond to the raised awareness and number of program inquiries.
In previous competitions, Zone 5 has been recognized as a finalist for the "We Are Tech Valley. We Are The Future." regional quality of life campaign in 2004, received winner's honors for the Launching of Ávila Independent Living Retirement Community in 2003, and was also named a winner for the Launching of the Carriage Homes of East Hills in 2002.
Each year, since 1995, the Albany Chapter of the American Marketing Association has presented the Mark of Excellence Awards. This year's ceremony will take place on October 4, 2006, at the Albany Marriott.

Zone 5 Congratulates Long-Time Clients Saratoga Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and The Center for Economic Growth (CEG) On Attracting Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) To Luther Forest Technology Campus
Noted Technology Marketing Firm Branded and Produced The Marketing Materials Used To Promote Luther Forest

Albany, NY – Zone 5, a full-service Tech Valley marketing and public relations firm with significant focus in the technology and economic development sectors, is pleased to congratulate long-time clients Saratoga Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and The Center for Economic Growth (CEG) on their success in attracting Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to the Luther Forest Technology Campus (Luther Forest) in Malta, NY. AMD, a global manufacturer of computer microprocessor chips, recently announced that it will be constructing a new 300mm chip fabrication plant (fab) at Luther Forest, a 1350-acre pre-permitted, pre-approved greenfield site located in the adjacent towns of Malta and Stillwater in Saratoga County, 15 miles north of Albany.
SEDC is to be congratulated for its hard work in readying the site, and for the organization's coordination with so many others in the effort to attract a world-class corporation of AMD's stature to Tech Valley. Also to be congratulated are CEG and Lamar Hill of Fusion Market Group for promoting the site to semiconductor manufacturing companies since 1998. Ironically, the first major company that the collective group visited was AMD. Eight years later, AMD's decision to locate at Luther Forest would not have happened without the sustained and bi-partisan cooperation between all the parties involved, including the SEDC and CEG, New York State, Saratoga County, and town government officials, Albany Nanotech at the University of Albany, the National Grid corporation, and many others. The cooperation between government, academia and industry allowed the deal with AMD to succeed, and helped Tech Valley grow towards its goal of a transforming New York State's Capital Region into a 21st century Northeast nanoelectronics cluster.
A leading marketing, advertising, and public relations firm with specialized focus in technology and economic development, Zone 5 has been working with CEG, SEDC, National Grid, numerous economic development organizations, and local nanotechnology companies to promote Tech Valley to the global semiconductor industry since 1998. The agency is proud to have played an integral part in the advancement of Tech Valley's high-tech growth goals by successfully branding, promoting, and connecting many of the region's technology companies with both national and global clients.
Zone 5 first branded the Luther Forest Technology Campus in 2003, bringing its theme "One of two places on the planet perfectly suited for nanoelectronics" to life in print collateral, trade show exhibit materials and promotional video. Most notably, Zone 5 designed and produced the display panels that were used as the backdrop for the press conference at Albany Nanotech where elected and economic development officials joined AMD Chairman Hector Ruiz in announcing the corporation's agreement to locate it's chip fab plant in Malta. The agency also designed and produced the "Luther Forest Welcomes AMD!" placards held by many in the crowd attending the press conference that day.
Other notable branding campaigns created by Zone 5 include "New York Loves Nanotech" (www.NYlovesnano.com), used to promote Tech Valley to global nanotechnology and semiconductor audiences at such preeminent industry events as SEMICON Europa in Munich, Germany, and the upcoming SEMICON West in San Francisco, California.
A full-service marketing communications agency, Zone 5 provides strategic marketing, creative design, public relations, and production services for technology and economic development companies and organizations throughout Tech Valley and New York State. The agency has created the branding and marketing materials used by Albany Nanotech, First Nano, XRay Optical Systems (XOS), Precision Flow Technologies, Integrated Liner Technologies, the International Alliance of Nanotechnology Regions, as well as the Center for Economic Growth (CEG) and many others.
Zone 5 Creative Director presents at Ad Club Education Seminar
Mark Esposito, Creative Director of Zone 5, presented a seminar on Creative Direction at the February 2nd breakfast seminar of the Albany Ad Club Association of Communication Professionals. Held at Professor Java's in Albany, an audience of local communications professionals listened as Mark explained the many hats a Creative Director wears as the person in charge of an agency or organization's creative department. Mark also discussed the need for the Creative Director to be involved at virtually all levels of the life of the promise given to a client — from business development staff who makes the promise, to the account staff who nurtures the promise, to the creative staff who executes the promise on through to the production staff who delivers the promise. He also discussed the varying levels of designers, explaining the need for each type of worker and how they fit into the structure of a creative staff. Discussions with the active crowd in attendance also addressed ways to gauge the attitude and ability of the creative staff, and how to work towards improving individual deficiencies and challenges.

As Creative Director of Zone 5, Mark Esposito oversees brand development, marketing, design, and project management for a broad roster of clients, from healthcare to retail. During his 17 years as a visual communicator, he has worked on everything from complete campaigns to multimedia presentations to fine art.

Twice as Nice: Zone 5 named one of the region's "Great Places to Work" for the second year in a row
ALBANY, NY - The Business Review once again named Zone 5 one of the region's 30 "Great Places to Work." The award recognizes companies for their positive work environment through a survey of its employees. For its second year, more than 140 companies were and more than 10,000 employee took the survey. Out of those companies, 30 businesses and organizations emerged from the process as The Business Review's "Great Places to Work" in the region.
Nominated companies were broken out by tiers based on the number of employees working in the Capital Region--10 to 30 employees; 31 to 50 employees; 51 to 150 employees; 150 to 500 employees, and 501 and over. The top six companies were honored in each tier and one overall winner was awarded per tier at a luncheon held on December 8th at the Crowne Plaza in Albany.

The Business Review worked with Quantum Market Research of Wichita, Kansas, who surveyed employees via Web-based surveys to find companies that succeed in retaining and recruiting good people while making them feel engaged in their work. The surveys included scores of questions that related to nine themes: team effectiveness, retention risk, alignment with goals, trust with co-workers, individual contribution, manager effectiveness, trust in senior leadership, feeling valued, and work engagement. Companies needed to reach a specific statistically significant percentage of employee participation to qualify for consideration.
"It's always an honor to be recognized by your peers in the community, but when it comes from within, it's a little more special," said Paul Hook, Director of Marketing for Zone 5. "Along with virtually no employee turnover over the last few years, this helps to confirm how much our people enjoy working at Zone 5. It's especially nice to gain this recognition two years in a row."
Zone 5 was one of 12 companies to receive the award for the second straight year.
Zone 5 Spearheads NY Loves Nanotech Exhibition at the Boston MRS Show
Albany, NY — Zone 5, a marketing communications agency specializing in the strategic branding and marketing of technology companies and economic development initiatives, is spearheading the upcoming NY Loves Nanotech exhibition (www.NYLovesNano.com) at the Materials Research Society (MRS) show in Boston from Nov. 29-Dec. 1, 2005 (see list below for participating companies). The sum of the whole is greater than all of the individuals involved.”
Zone 5 was instrumental in bringing together the consortium’s executive level decision makers to agree upon the marketing messaging, approach, positioning, and visual branding of the NY Loves Nanotech campaign. The Business Review worked with Quantum Market Research of Wichita, Kansas, who surveyed employees to find companies that succeed in retaining and recruiting good people while making them feel engaged in their work.
"It's flattering", said Zone 5 President Todd Mosher, who said that the company atmosphere, policies and hiring practices are key elements of making Zone 5 a place where people want to work. "The biggest thing is the selection of people. It's not just about hiring people who can do the work. [Zone 5] wants people who can fit the culture. Zone 5 was the only company of its size or larger to have no employee turnover in 2003."
